Opalux’s mechanically activated technology utilizes structured photonic crystals to produce pure colors that have the capacity to appear, disappear and change dramatically depending on the nature of the physical stimulus.

Opalux’s Photonic Crystal structures are in this case married with synthetic rubbers, which give the materials a rubber-like quality. They can be stretched, squeezed, twisted like a typical rubber, but unlike a typical rubber all these changes in shape result in dramatic color changes arising from distortions of the Photonic Crystal structure.

Currently, the lead technology in this cluster has the working name of Elastink. Elastink materials are thin films ideally suited for use in the broad field of authentication, anti-counterfeit, and tamper-proof devices. Elastink features include:

    • Activation by human user without power assist, easy-to-use interface requires minimal user trainingSingle (e.g.: tamper proofing, product protection) and multiple (e.g.: identity cards, banknotes) use.
    • Customizable features, images and data visible only upon activation, including time and validation period stamps for ready identification and to reduce transference.
    • Machine-readable for visible or invisible (UV, IR) high-security markers
    • Clear and dramatic instant verification.

The unique properties, composition and fabrication of Photonic Color material makes them almost impossible to counterfeit or forge. Opalux’s mechanically activated devices are ideally suited to applications such as:

    • Security papers such as financial papers, passports, banknotes, etc.
    • ID cards, drivers licenses
    • Over-the-counter and prescription drugs, baby formula, vaccines, cosmetics, etc.
