Opalux Incorporated (”Opalux”) is a company dedicated to the development of tunable photonic crystals whose optical reflectivity can be manipulated across the entire spectral range of UV, visible, and IR. Opalux is currently focusing its efforts on two markets. P-Ink technology targets large scale advertising displays such as store fronts and road-side billboards. Elastink technology enables the authentication of products and documents, from consumer goods to identity and value cards such as credit cards and drivers’ licenses that are often targeted by counterfeiters.
P-Ink technology utilizes structured photonic crystals to produce pure colors that are electronically tunable across the entire visible spectrum and beyond. Competitive advantages include low power consumption, high brightness, substrate independence, durability, easy scalability, and cost effectiveness.
The Elastink Technology is also based on color-variant photonic crystals. The color change is effected mechanically rather than electronically. This allows for the creation of a highly customizable and effective full color “signature” that is user friendly, highly identifiable, counterfeit resistant, and ideally suited to becoming the next generation technology for ID, document and product authentication.
P-Ink and Elastink build on sustained pioneering research by Prof. Geoffrey Ozin and Dr. AndrĂ© Arsenault at the University of Toronto. Elastink technology was recently featured on the cover of the world-renowned scientific journal Nature Materials. And an article on the P-Ink technology was recently accepted for publication in Nature Photonics. Ozin and Arsenault are also co-authors of the textbook Nanochemistry: A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials, which Science magazine calls “a book that is unlike any other…a gem in the scientific literature.”
Opalux is seeking alliances and support from research and industry partners whose strengths and capabilities complement and leverage its expertise and resources. The objective is to develop high value applications and accelerate commercialization of the most lucrative families of its platform technologies through research excellence in creativity and innovation.
